Hunan Provincial Museum is a Provincial Museum of history and art in China. There are more than 110000 items in the museum, and 763 first-class items. The collection includes Neolithic stone and pottery, Shang and Zhou bronze, Chu cultural relics, unearthed cultural relics from Mawangdui Han tomb, Xiangyin kiln and Yuezhou kiln from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Changsha kiln underglaze color porcelain in the Tang and Five Dynasties, Tang people copying Wang Xizhi's "preface to Lanting" volume and the handwriting of Wang Fuzhi, a famous ideologist in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty.

There are also many cultural relics in Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and Hunan peasant movement. There are more than 3000 precious cultural relics and women's corpses unearthed from three Han Tombs in Mawangdui, Changsha, such as Fangding with human face pattern, larao with elephant pattern, Xiangtan's Xiangzun with elephant pattern, etc. The t-shaped silk paintings unearthed from Mawangdui No. 1 tomb in Changsha are 2.05 meters long and depict the scenes of heaven, earth and underground. Myth and reality are integrated. They are buried in the tomb as the "inscription" of the owner of the tomb "leading the soul to the heaven".

28 silk books with more than 120000 characters, including Laozi, Zhouyi, Jingfa, Zhanguo zongjiashu, Chunqiu Shiyu, wuxingzhan, astronomy and meteorology miscellaneous account, 52 disease prescriptions and so on, were unearthed in tomb 3. Most of them are ancient books that have been lost for a long time. They are very high for the study of ancient philosophy, history, astronomy, medicine and so on Value.

In order to prevent the natural damage of these cultural relics, the museum adopts a combination of modern science and traditional technology to protect them. Some feasible methods or successful experiences have been found for the removal of silk fabrics, disinfection and decontamination, insect and mould prevention, reinforcement and protection, etc. Achievements have also been made in the dehydration and finalization of lacquer wood and bamboo ware, the restoration of bronze ware and the reproduction of cultural relics.    

The museum basically displays "Hunan historical relics display" and "Mawangdui Han tomb display". The Han tombs of Mawangdui show the female corpses and their internal organs preserved in the basement, the huge recovered coffins, and the No.3 and No.2 tombs preserved at the site of Mawangdui. Cultural relics and other cultural relics unearthed from Mawangdui Han tomb have been exhibited in many provinces, cities, Japan, the United States and Hong Kong. The museum also held more than 40 exhibitions, including the exhibition of Hunan revolutionary history, the exhibition of Chu cultural relics, the exhibition of Ming and Qing paintings in the collection, the exhibition of Ming and Qing handicrafts, and the exhibition of Qi Baishi paintings. The museum has edited and published more than 30 kinds of books and periodicals, such as Hunan Provincial Museum (Volume 2 of large atlas China Museum Series), Changsha Mawangdui No.1 Han Tomb (large excavation report), Mawangdui Han tomb research, Hunan Archaeology Series (1-3 episodes), and xinminxuehui materials.  

Exhibition hall scale
Located in the north of Hunan Revolutionary Martyrs Park, Changsha City, Hunan Province, it covers an area of more than 50000 square meters and a building area of 20000 square meters. It was built in March 1951 and opened in February 1956.
