The National Stadium (Bird's Nest) is the main stadium of the 29th Summer Olympic Games. It is located in the central area of Beijing Olympic Park, covering an area of 20.4 hectares, with a building area of 258000 square meters, and can accommodate 91000 spectators. The National Stadium project is a super sports building with a design service life of 100 years. The main building is an elliptical bird's nest shaped by a series of steel trusses around the bowl shaped seating area. It is 333 meters long from north to south, 296 meters wide from east to west, and 69 meters high at the highest point. The construction of the National Stadium started on December 24, 2003 and was completed on June 28, 2008.

The National Stadium is located on the base platform which is slowly sloping from the ground. Spectators can get to the stadium from the Olympic Park along the base platform. The north side of the base is a sinking warm-up field, which is connected with the competition field in the main stadium through the athlete channel. There are seven floors above the base of the stadium, including audience service facilities, media working area, VIP reception area and business area. There are three floors below the base, including the inner ring road of the zero floor, parking lot and a large number of functional rooms. The bowl stand is divided into upper, middle and lower three layers, and a box and seat area are arranged between the upper and middle stands.

In the construction of the National Stadium, advanced energy-saving design and environmental protection measures have been adopted, such as good natural ventilation and natural lighting, comprehensive recovery of rainwater, utilization of renewable geothermal energy, application of solar photovoltaic power generation technology, etc., which are truly large-scale "green buildings".

During the Beijing Olympic Games, the National Stadium, as the main venue, undertook the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field events and football finals. The wonderful opening and closing ceremony performance complements the magnificent structure of the bird's nest, which makes the world amazing. Bolt, Isinbayeva and other outstanding athletes have achieved record performances in the bird's nest. After the Beijing Olympic Games, the bird's nest has successfully held the 2015 Beijing track and field world championships and will become the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. As the first stadium to hold the opening and closing ceremonies of the summer and Winter Olympic Games, the bird's nest has become a landmark building representing the national image, transcending the concept of pure sports or architecture, and given a more sacred and profound social significance.
