Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is a large-scale social and cultural project invested and built by Shanghai Municipal People's government. It was started in December 1998 and completed in April 2001. It covers an area of 68000 square meters, a building area of 98000 square meters, with a total investment of 1.755 billion yuan, including 855 million yuan for civil engineering installation, 500 million yuan for phase I exhibition and 400 million yuan for phase II exhibition. The building of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum consists of one underground floor, four floors on the ground and an office complex. The whole building shows a spiral rising form, which shows the continuous progress of science and technology. In the middle of the building is a huge symbolic glass sphere, embedded in a pool of clear water, which means the birth of life. There are 12 permanent exhibition areas in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, including earth exploration, biological Vientiane, light of wisdom, children's science and Technology Park, audio-visual Park, designer cradle, earth home, information age, robot world, light of exploration, human and health, and aerospace world. In addition, there is a spider exhibition showing the unique life style of spiders, reflecting the ancient Chinese science and technology corridor created and invented in ancient China, and the Explorer corridor showing famous scientists at home and abroad. Located at No. 260 East Yan'an Road, Puxi, the natural museum branch is also an integral part of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, with an exhibition area of 65500 square meters. There are also four special cinemas in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, namely, giant screen cinema, globe screen cinema, four-dimensional cinema and space cinema. They constitute the largest science cinema in Asia so far, with an annual projection of 8000 times. Giant screen cinema and ball screen cinema are located on the first floor underground, and four-dimensional cinema is located on the first floor above the ground.
