The predecessor of Tianjin Natural Museum is Beijiang Museum, which was founded in 1914 and renamed Tianjin Natural Museum in 1957. In 1997, Tianjin municipal government invested to rebuild the natural museum, which was reopened in 1998. The new Museum covers an area of 20000 square meters, with a building area of 12000 square meters. It consists of four functional areas: exhibition hall, collection library, business room and botanical garden. There are front square, underground parking lot, VIP Hall, meeting room, multi-functional hall, and other ancillary equipment. The main building "seashells with beads" shape implies that Tianjin Museum of nature is a pearl on the Bohai Sea. She is one of the few comprehensive museums in China, which gathers animals, plants, paleontology, geology and other disciplines. There are 380000 biological specimens in the collection, including more than 1300 first-class and second-class treasures and more than 1400 model specimens. With a long history, rich collection and outstanding achievements in scientific research, it is a popular science education base integrating collection, research, exhibition and teaching as well as tourism. It was awarded the national popular science education base and national patriotism education base. Tianjin nature museum was awarded the title of national top ten exhibition boutique by the State Administration of cultural relics in 1998. The exhibition hall is composed of preface hall, ocean world, dinosaur grand view, ancient mammal hall, animal ecology hall, world insect hall, marine shellfish hall, tropical plant greenhouse, and audio-visual education hall to show the diversity of species, ecological diversity and harmony between human and nature. In 2004, the "ocean world" of Tianjin was built and opened to the public, which filled in the gap of Tianjin large-scale ocean Museum. The exhibition hall is equipped with multi-media touch screen participation project, and the audio-visual education hall is equipped with large screen projection equipment. The museum is equipped with voice guided machine, accessible passage, wheelchair and audience lounge.
