Located in the southeast corner of Luobulinka, Lhasa, Tibet Museum is the first modern museum in Tibet. In July 1994, it was listed as one of the 62 projects of Daqing's assistance to Tibet on the 30th anniversary of the founding of Tibet Autonomous Region, and was completed and opened on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China and the 40th anniversary of Tibet's democratic reform in October 1999. The Museum covers an area of 53959 square meters, with a total construction area of 23508 square meters and an exhibition hall area of 10451 square meters. On the central axis of the museum area is the preface hall, the main exhibition hall and the cultural relics warehouse. The Tibetan Museum has the distinct characteristics of Tibetan traditional architectural art, but also deeply embodies the practical characteristics and artistic charm of modern architecture.

Since December 1, 2016, the Museum of Tibet Autonomous Region has been closed for reconstruction and expansion. On October 28, 2017, the foundation of the renovation and expansion project of the museum, which was implemented by the state with an investment of 660 million yuan, was laid. It is expected that the main project construction will be completed by the beginning of 2020.
