Changshu is located in the east of Jiangsu Province, with Shanghai in the East, Suzhou in the south, Wuxi in the West and Nantong across the river in the north. It is the second batch of national famous historical and cultural cities announced by the State Council with beautiful mountains and rivers, abundant resources, developed culture and outstanding people.

Changshu museum is located next to the tomb of Zhongyong and Yanzi, sages at the eastern foot of the ancient city of Yu. It covers an area of more than 6000 square meters and a building area of 5500 square meters. It is composed of seven exhibition halls, cultural relics storehouses, office buildings, lecture halls and auxiliary rooms. It was officially opened to the public on September 28, 1997. Changshu Museum consists of five departments: office, publicity and education department, archaeological collection department, storage department and security department. Changshu museum now has more than 15000 cultural relics of all kinds from Songze and Liangzhu cultures to the period of the new democratic revolution, including calligraphy, painting, ceramics and jade. No matter the number and grade of the collection, it ranks among the top museums at the same level in the country. Among them, 155 paintings and calligraphies have been listed in the catalogue of ancient Chinese painting and calligraphy. The volume contains 323 sets of epitaphs collected by Changshu Museum and Changshu stele Museum in various periods, providing first-hand physical evidence for the study of Changshu's historical evolution and regional system.

In 2005, Changshu museum was listed by the State Administration of cultural relics as one of the six pilot units of "museum display and service improvement" project at the county level. The completion of the project provides Changshu museum with a better display of Changshu's profound historical and cultural heritage and rich collection, a better platform for citizens and two civilizations.

Under the leadership of the municipal Party committee, the municipal government and the Bureau of culture, Changshu museum will work hard to promote the further prosperity and development of Changshu culture, and launch exhibitions of fine collections or various single collections with local characteristics, so as to closely contact and communicate with all sectors of society. Facing the society, opening the door, carrying forward the history and culture of famous cities, promoting friendly cooperation and exchanges at home and abroad, and expanding the popularity of Changshu will be the main working policies and tasks of Changshu museum now and in the future.
