market analysis

Market Background

Ecuador is a member of OPEC, and the oil industry is the backbone of the country's economy. According to data from Ecuador, the country has abundant oil reserves, with proven reserves of approximately 8.2 billion barrels by the end of 2023, mainly concentrated in the eastern Amazon Basin. Oil exports account for approximately 50% of Ecuador's export revenue and one-third of its tax revenue, playing an important role in political and economic welfare; Oil consumption accounts for about 70% of the country's total energy consumption. Hydroelectric power is the second largest source of energy in Ecuador, accounting for approximately 15% of energy consumption. Due to the impact of drought and climate change in recent years, the production capacity of hydropower has significantly decreased, leading to unstable domestic power supply in Ecuador.

Chinese companies have carried out cooperation and operations in various fields in Ecuador, including PetroChina and Sinopec in the oil industry, China Railway Construction Copper Crown Investment Co., Ltd. in the mining industry, China Hydropower in the infrastructure industry, Huawei and ZTE in the communication industry, as well as China Energy Engineering Corporation

Zhouba Second Company undertakes the construction of the Baote Soporadora hydropower station project, while China Power Construction Corporation completes the construction of the hydroelectric power station in Ecuador, the Coca Codo Sinclair hydropower station. Ecuador is one of China's important engineering contracting markets and investment and financing partners in Latin America. Its government is committed to creating a more attractive business environment and has a good willingness to continue deepening bilateral pragmatic cooperation with China. On May 11, 2023, Ecuador and China signed a free trade agreement, opening up space for further cooperation between the two sides.

Single energy structure

Although Ecuador has abundant oil and natural gas resources, they are mainly used as fuel and chemical raw materials. The utilization of oil and natural gas in electricity production is not significant, and the installed capacity of fossil fuel power generation accounts for about 39%, and the actual power generation proportion is even lower. The Cuenca Dispatch reported in early November 2024 that Ecuador is experiencing the most serious national power shortage problem, with a power deficit of about 1900 megawatts, mainly due to sustained drought and high dependence on hydropower

Lai. About 72% of Ecuador's actual electricity comes from hydroelectric power generation. However, since April 2024, the significant reduction in rainfall in the region has led to a decrease in reservoir water levels, limiting its power generation capacity. Ecuador used to rely on importing electricity from Colombia to supplement its shortfall, but Colombia has also experienced power supply shortages, resulting in a reduction in electricity exports to Ecuador.

Weak energy infrastructure

Ecuador's energy infrastructure is weak, manifested in excessive reliance on hydropower, outdated thermal and electrical equipment, and limited backup energy options. To compensate for the shortage of hydroelectric power generation, Ecuador's thermal and electric facilities have also been included in emergency power generation. However, most of the existing thermal and electrical facilities in Ecuador are outdated with an operating lifespan of over 30 years, and the actual available production capacity is limited. At present, there is approximately 3439 megawatts of thermal and electrical installed capacity in Ecuador, but about 2000 megawatts of the facilities are too outdated to generate sufficient electricity. The current available thermal power capacity is only about 879 megawatts, which is far from enough to make up for the gap caused by insufficient hydropower generation. The newly built power generation projects from 2022 to 2024 are mainly hydropower stations, and the newly added power generation capacity is far below the actual growth in electricity demand. Ecuador has insufficient investment in clean energy and backup energy. The outdated and poorly maintained power infrastructure leads to high transmission and distribution losses in the power grid, exacerbating the dilemma of energy shortage.

Opportunities for Chinese Enterprises

In 2025, Ecuador will hold a new presidential election. In order to stabilize the situation and public opinion, it is likely to continue to expand opportunities for foreign energy cooperation, increase oil production, improve power supply, and stabilize the economy. Chinese energy companies have collaborated with Ecuador on multiple benchmark projects in the early stages, establishing a good corporate image and laying the foundation for the sustainable development of bilateral relations in the future. For future cooperation, the author proposes the following suggestions.

Market News

Ecuador suspends operation of two oil pipelines due to heavy rainfall

On July 2nd local time, the National Oil Company of Ecuador announced that due to heavy rainfall, the flow of the Loko River in El Chaco town, Napo province, has increased. To protect infrastructure and the environment, the operation of two oil pipelines in Ecuador's pipeline system has been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.

The announcement states that professional technicians are urgently constructing bypass pipelines to ensure the safe transportation of crude oil. It is expected that the project will take about three days to complete.

The oil pipeline in El Chaco town leaked on March 22nd. Oil is Ecuador's main export product, and according to data from the Ecuadorian National Oil Company, the country's daily oil production is close to 500000 barrels.

Exhibition Introduction

RENEWABLE ENERGY 2026 Ecuador Electricity Renewable Energy Exhibition: Oil, Electricity, and Natural Gas Exhibition

The CONFERENCE OIL&POWER GAS exhibition is currently in its 28th year and is organized by HJ BECDACH. The exhibition is held in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. It is the most important energy exhibition in Ecuador, covering the themes of mineral and oil resources, as well as renewable energy and electricity. And the repeat order rate after the 2024 exhibition is almost 70%, making it one of the representative energy exhibitions in Ecuador and even South America. At present, Ecuador is facing an energy crisis, which will also be an important activity for discussing countermeasures and seeking solutions. At that time, it will attract a large number of relevant personnel, procurement, construction companies, and oil exploration related enterprises in the industry to participate.
