The ocean, which accounts for 71% of the earth's surface area, is a rich and far from developed resource treasure house, and also a battlefield of war. In the 21st century, mankind is faced with three contradictory challenges: population expansion and living space, land resource depletion and social production growth, ecological environment degradation and human development. To maintain its own survival, reproduction and development, we must make full use of marine resources, which is an unavoidable choice. For China, where per capita resources are scarce, marine development is of special significance. Therefore, the underwater robot will play an important role in marine environment monitoring, marine resource exploration, underwater resource development, underwater operation, deep-sea scientific research and application, and it will lead people into the deep ocean.

As underwater robots have been widely used in many fields, including ocean engineering, port construction, offshore oil, maritime law enforcement and evidence collection, scientific research and naval defense, to complete underwater search and rescue, detection and salvage, deep-sea resource investigation, submarine pipeline laying, inspection and maintenance, underwater archaeology, power station and dam detection, etc., the research of underwater robots has made great progress, It is gradually forming an industry, and its application scope has become increasingly broad. After the key technologies such as overall control, intelligent sensors, integrated positioning and underwater communication of navigators are further mature and developed, underwater robots will become more intelligent, reliable and practical, and have a broader application prospect in military and marine fields. As early as the end of the last century, the international underwater robot industry has formed an industrial cluster represented by the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France and other developed countries. Although China's underwater robot industry started late, it has reached about 58 billion yuan in 2020. It is expected that China's underwater robot industry will account for 50% of the international market by 2030, with the market size exceeding 100 billion yuan. 2023 Xi'an International Underwater Machinery Exhibition will provide a platform for exhibition and exchange for domestic and foreign counterparts.
