The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) opened in November 1988. Since then, Hong Kong's trade exhibition business has flourished, laying Hong Kong's position as a hub for trade activities in Asia and a major venue for international conferences.

The title of the Convention and Exhibition Centre is jointly owned by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Government. The Government entrusts the Hong Kong Trade Development Council with the development, design and management of the Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council has signed a management and operation agreement with the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Co., Ltd.         Since the opening of the Convention and Exhibition Center, the utilization rate has continued to rise; the expansion project was also completed in June 1997, and the total area of the main venue has more than doubled. The expansion of the Convention and Exhibition Centre further promotes Hong Kong's position as a center of Asian trade activity to the 21st century.

        The expansion project cost a total of 4.8 billion Hong Kong dollars (620 million U.S. dollars, 1997 currency value), of which the reclamation project began in June 1994. The construction cost of the Convention and Exhibition Center at the time of opening in 1988 was HK $ 1.6 billion (US $ 207 million, 1986 currency value). This figure does not include land prices.

Pavilion size

        The Convention and Exhibition Center currently has a total area of 248,000 square meters (2.67 million square feet), of which more than 70,000 square meters (753,474 square feet) are available for rent. In response to the existing and new customers' requirements for the exhibition venue, the construction of the second phase of the expansion of the exhibition center began in July 2006. The project will be completed in 2009, which will add 19,400 square meters of exhibition space to the Convention and Exhibition Center, which will increase the exhibition space to 83,000 square meters, and the total area available for rent in the center will be close to 90,000 square meters.
