Shantou museum is a comprehensive museum. The museum is located in Zhongshan Park with a quiet and elegant environment. Founded in 1960, the museum is the main collection, publicity and education institution and scientific research institution of cultural relics and specimens in Chaoshan area, as well as an important patriotism education base and youth education service base in Shantou City.

Shantou museum is now divided into offices, safekeeping department, exhibition department and other departments. There are a group of professionals with professional titles at the beginning, middle and senior levels. There are nearly 10000 pieces of ceramics, calligraphy and painting, gold lacquer and wood carvings, inkstone seals, ancient coins and other cultural relics in the collection since the Neolithic age. Some of them are national treasures. For example, in China, there are only two sets of red sand ornaments made by Chen Mingyuan in the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, the fruits and melons for all living beings in the Qing Dynasty; there are only a few paintings treasures of Lin Liang, a famous painter in Guangdong Province in the Ming Dynasty, the painting axis of Lu Yan and magpie; the book of Yu Yongxing's travel in linchu, Henan Province by Fang Yizhi in the Ming Dynasty; and the window of Phoenix with golden lacquer Tong figures in Chaozhou of the Qing Dynasty, which are resplendent and exquisitely carved Duzai: there are a number of cultural relics such as the landscape figure Jasper pen holder written by Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty and the Song Mountain traveling on the green jade mountain written by Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty. These precious cultural relics make Shantou Museum enjoy a certain reputation in China. In 1982, Liu Haisu, a famous artist, wrote the name of Shantou Museum. In 1986, he was admitted as a group member by the Chinese Museum Society.    

Since its establishment, Shantou Museum has held a series of exhibitions, such as the exhibition of unearthed cultural relics in Shantou area, the exhibition of Chaoshan folk cultural relics, the exhibition of Chaoshan revolutionary cultural relics, the exhibition of Chaoshan overseas Chinese history, the exhibition of Chaoshan all lacquer wood carving, the exhibition of Chinese imperial examination cultural relics, the exhibition of national flag ode of the people's Republic of China, shouldering People's hope -- large scale picture exhibition to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and other nearly 100 exhibitions. And often to organs, enterprises, schools to hold mobile exhibitions, these exhibitions attracted a large number of visitors, and achieved good social benefits. The museum, known as the "textbook of history", "the palace of art", "the classroom of life-long education", has fully reflected the educational function of the elegant cultural place and social window.     

In terms of academic research, Shantou Museum has long focused on the local history of Chaoshan, the characteristics and products of ancient ceramic kilns in Chaoshan; investigated and studied the folk cultural relics, gold lacquer woodcarvings in Chaoshan, the birth and death years of ancient Chaoqi painters, the characteristics of works and Chaoshan handicrafts, and has written a number of more influential research articles. At present, many professionals have been absorbed and elected as members, directors and presidents by national, provincial and Municipal Museum societies and professional research societies.      

Because the current site of Shantou museum is a brick and wood structure building built in 1956, and its area is small and old, it can not meet the needs of work development. Therefore, on January 22, 1995, Shantou Municipal Government approved the construction of a new building in the northwest corner of Zhongshan Park. The new pavilion is located on the Bank of Hanjiang River and Yuemei River, with Zhongshan Park at its back, surrounded by streams and covered by green trees. In order to facilitate access, a bridge is built in front of the museum to cross the Yuemei River from handi road to the new museum, which looks like a new moon, reflecting on the calm river, adding some beauty to the new museum. The total investment of the new museum is more than 100 million yuan. The foundation was laid on June 18, 1995, and the construction was officially started. It covers an area of about 6000 square meters, a total construction area of about 17279 square meters and a height of 42.5 meters. It has 9 floors (8 floors on the ground and 1 floor underground). The building has a novel and generous appearance. The building style is based on Chaoshan architecture, with colonnades, large cornices, and glazed tiles. The wall is decorated with granite reliefs. Integrating tradition with modernity. Against the background of surrounding gardens and rivers, the whole building is particularly fresh and pleasing to the eye. When night falls, the lights start together, and the whole building is full of light and splendor.     

The new building is also designed to resist earthquakes of more than 9 degrees, adopts the advanced basic rubber isolation technology in the world, and is designed as an intelligent building. In the elevator, air conditioning, anti-theft, fire-fighting and other aspects of the equipment, are selected in the world's more advanced products. It can be said that the new museum of Shantou museum is a modern building integrating exhibition, collection, academic research and office with underground parking lot and various supporting service facilities. After the completion of the new museum, a number of cultural relics will be added to the collection, and the types of cultural relics in the embassy will be more complete, and a series of exhibitions and exhibitions full of visual impact and visual beauty will be held by means of sound, photoelectric and other means and equipment.
